In 1914, when World War I began, Shepard enlisted in the Royal Artillery and was assigned to the 105 Siege Battery where he battled at the Somme, Arras, the Third Battle of Ypres, and in Italy. At the end of his four year service, Shepard was awarded a Military Cross and retired with the rank of Major.

Shepard was born in St John's Wood, London. Having shown some promise in drawing at St Paul's School, in 1897 he enrolled in the Heatherley School of Fine Art in Chelsea. After a productive year there, he attended the Royal Academy Schools, winning a Landseer scholarship in 1899 and a British Institute prize in 1900.

Ernest Shepard was an English illustrator and artist. He was best known for his work on The wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame and Winnie the Pooh by A. A Milne which are said to have human like qualities to them. Born in London in 1879 in attended schools such as St Paul’s School, and Heatherleys School of Fine Art in Chelsea.
